FatTag — AI-Powered E-commerce Photography Suite

Overview

FatTag is an AI-powered SaaS platform that generates high-quality lifestyle product photography from a single flat design file. Built for apparel sellers and DTC creators, the tool replaces expensive photoshoots with automated, photorealistic imagery — delivered in under 60 seconds.

As the founder and product designer, I led the end-to-end design process, from user flow to technical constraints, visual system, and pricing strategy.

The Problem

Small apparel brands rely heavily on lifestyle photography to drive sales — but:

  • Professional photoshoots cost thousands of dollars

  • Turnaround takes days or weeks

  • Existing mockup tools look “fake” or generic

  • AI tools often distort graphics or ignore real-world context

These creators needed a faster, cheaper, and more realistic way to produce high-quality images for Instagram, TikTok, Amazon, Shopify, and Etsy.

The Solution

I designed and prototyped a vertical SaaS product that uses Generative AI (Gemini 3 Pro + Nano Banana) to instantly transform a T-shirt graphic into fully stylized, photorealistic product images.

The system combines:

  • AI-powered upscaling

  • Real-model photorealistic generation

  • Automatic color matching

  • Smart cropping

  • Multi-platform export formats

  • A creator-friendly UX with minimal learning curve

This turns a PNG upload into professional 4K lifestyle content in under one minute.

Key Design Challenges & Technical Solutions

This is where the project demonstrates true Product Design thinking — solving real constraints through design, not just screens.

1. The Transparency Challenge (AI treats transparent PNGs as solid boxes)

Generative AI models tend to “see” the transparent bounding box as part of the object — causing shirts to look warped or rectangular.

My Solution:

  • Implemented server-side preprocessing to trim excess transparent pixels

  • Designed prompt logic that treats the user’s design as a fabric decal, not an object

  • Adapted UI feedback to educate users when transparency needed correction

This dramatically improved realism and fabric adhesion.

2. The Aspect Ratio Constraint (API forced 1:1 images)

The AI API only supported square output (1:1), which created mismatches for Instagram (4:5), TikTok (9:16), Shopify (3:4), and landscape web formats (16:9).

My Solution:

  • Designed a Smart Crop & Viewport Tool

  • Allowed users to move and scale the composition inside any ratio

  • Used CSS overlays to produce social-ready crops without modifying the original AI output

  • Ensured consistency across all social commerce platforms

This hybrid solution balanced technical constraints with creator expectations.

3. Pricing & Monetization Strategy

Most AI mockup tools priced outputs at $0.99, which undervalued photorealistic lifestyle imagery.

My Approach:

  • Conducted a competitive analysis (Placeit, Kittl, Canva, Midjourney workflows)

  • Moved FatTag toward value-based pricing: $2.99 per download

  • Bundled multi-export formats to justify premium positioning

  • Designed onboarding to explain cost-savings clearly

This positioned FatTag as a premium production tool, not a commodity mockup generator.

  • Speed: Reduced content creation time
    from 7 days → under 1 minute

  • Cost: Lowered lifestyle photography cost by
    ~98% compared to traditional shoots

  • Quality: 4K photorealistic outputs suitable for
